The tide decides your day
Diani sits behind a reef with a big tidal range. At low tide the sea withdraws a long way and you can walk out over the flats; at high tide it comes up to the hotel steps.
It is a rhythm rather than a problem — the tables are published a year ahead — but it surprises people who pictured swimming whenever they felt like it.

The questions we get most
Can I go on safari from Diani?
Properly, yes — Tsavo is three to five hours by road or reachable on the SGR train, and the Mara is a flight via Nairobi. Give either at least two nights.
What you cannot do is a day trip that counts as a safari. Shimba Hills is a pleasant half-day inland and it is not a substitute. If somebody sells you a "Diani safari" that never leaves the coast, that is a day out.
How many nights should we give Diani?
Three is the minimum for it to register. Five is where people genuinely relax. Since a beach night costs a fraction of a safari night, extra nights here are the cheapest way to lengthen a Kenya trip.
Is the swimming good?
Yes, around high tide. The reef keeps the water calm and clear. At low tide the sea retreats a long way on much of the beach and you walk out over the flats instead — which is its own pleasure, particularly with children.
When should we not come?
April and May. The long rains hit the coast hard and a good number of hotels close or run reduced service. It is the one window we actively steer people away from.
