Does the sea really go out that far?
On much of the beach, yes — several hundred metres at spring low tides. It comes back. Swim around high tide, walk the flats at low tide, and make sure your hotel has a decent pool.
Which stretch should we choose?
Central Diani if you want to walk to restaurants and have the most choice. Galu or the south if you want quiet. The north if you are taking a villa. It changes the holiday more than the hotel does.
Are there beach vendors?
Yes, more so on the central strip. They are friendly and persistent. A firm, polite no works. Some people enjoy the interaction; some find it wearing, and if that is you, stay further south.
Is it safe to swim?
Inside the reef, generally yes — it is calm and shallow. Take local advice about currents at the reef breaks, wear reef shoes on the flats because of urchins, and treat the sun as stronger than it feels on the equator.

Can we do a safari as a day trip?
Not a real one. Shimba Hills is a pleasant half-day of coastal forest inland. For Kenya’s wildlife you need to leave the coast for at least two nights — Tsavo by road or train, or the Mara by air.
How much cheaper is the beach than a safari?
Substantially. A safari night is fully inclusive of park fees, guiding and a vehicle; a beach night is a hotel room. That is why we usually suggest more beach nights and fewer safari nights when a budget is tight.
Is Diani good for families?
Very. Shallow warm water at the right tides, resorts with pools and kids’ clubs, short flights, and a low-tide beach that will occupy a six-year-old for hours. Our family guide goes further.
How far ahead should I book?
For July to October — the migration months in the Masai Mara — six to twelve months is normal, and the best small camps sell out first. Christmas and New Year book up just as early.
For the shoulder months, three to four months is usually comfortable. Inside eight weeks we can still put a very good trip together, but you are choosing from what is left rather than from everything.
